How to Clean a Moldy Coffee Maker?

But, what if we tell you it might not be good for your health? Don’t worry. We’re just talking about the dirt, yeast, bacteria, and mold sitting inside your coffee maker. So, let’s get into how to clean a moldy coffee maker.

 

Why do you need to clean your coffee maker?

We’re all lazy in our own ways. Busy, busy we said. We don’t clean or look after our coffee makers as often as needed. 

Surveys have shown how coffee makers tend to grow mold, yeast, and tend to create friendly environments for other microorganisms with time. 

If not cleaned properly and regularly, the contamination can be sickening. Therefore, it’s really important to maintain your coffee maker and keep it clean all the time.

Secondly, you can not escape a bad tasting coffee when your coffee maker is moldy inside. Doubtlessly, it messes with the brewing and makes your coffee tasting unpleasant. 

 

 

How often do you need to clean it

There are two ways to clean a coffee maker. You either deep clean it once in a while, or you wash it every now and then.

Deep cleaning should be usually done once in two to four weeks. It also depends on the type of water you use. If it’s hard water then the machine needs to be deep cleaned every week or two. If it’s soft water, you should deep clean every three to four weeks. 

However, it is recommended to thoroughly wash the removable parts of a coffee maker after every use.

 

How to clean a moldy coffee maker; Deep cleaning and de-calcifying:

 

  • Take out your water reservoir and wash it thoroughly with soap water.
  • Now fill the carafe halfway with water and halfway with white vinegar or a descaling solution. For the ratio, you can also refer to the instructions on the descaling solution
  • Start the brew cycle. Let it brew till half of the reservoir has been utilized. 
  • Then, stop the brewing and let the solution sit and treat the calcifications for 30 to 45 minutes. 
  • Continue brewing till all the solution has been utilized. 
  • Now remove the reservoir and carafe and wash both of them nicely.
  • Fill the reservoir again, now purely with water. Place the reservoir and the carafe back.
  • Brew the water again. Let it brew all of the reservoir at once. 
  • Once the reservoir is empty, remove it as well as the carafe, filter basket, warming plate, and any other removable washable part. 
  • Wash them all nicely and put them back. Voila! Guess whose  coffee maker is all clean and shiny!

 

Note: For the perfect results, use filtered and clean drinking water for cleaning.

You can repeat brewing clean water more than once to make sure no no traces of the solution are left. 

 

 

How to maintain a coffee maker

Wash all of the removable parts, including the water reservoir, the warming plate, filter basket, and your carafe, after every use.

Molds and germs love moisture, so make sure to let the parts dry completely before you place them back.

Do not leave your coffee in the carafe for a long time. This bad habit tends to create dark spots inside a carafe and leave a grimy layer making it super difficult to clean.

Soak the removable parts in a mixture made up of vinegar/dishwashing liquid and hot water for about half to 1 hour before you carry usual rinsing. Try doing these once a week.

You can also use a toothbrush, with some baking soda on it, to clean the crevices.
